Update on Sara ~ 10/2/08

Well, I went to visit Sara last night. What a trouper she is! She is upbeat and her normal ole self despite all that has happened this week. Her sense of humor is even intact. She told the doctor yesterday that while she is happy to have her leg, she was rather looking forward to being a pirate for Halloween. He busted out laughing! And then she told the nurse that she'd have given her right leg(the one with all the trauma) if the Twins could have just won that game on Tuesday. The nurse tried hard not to laugh as they are so serious, but she couldn't resist.
So, Sara is progressing! She is looking and feeling wonderful. She is stuck in the ICU indefinitely as they sedate her rather heavily in the AM to do a dressing change. She is on morphine and antibiotics to keep infection at bay. She shouldn't need any more surgeries to remove skin as they are rather confident they got it all with the second surgery.
I didn't realize the full extent of how much skin they took off when I wrote before, but from just a little below her knee to just a little above her ankle, all the skin, all the way around her leg, is gone. She has just muscle and bone. I thought they only took the aggravated purple/black area. She can move her toes and flex her ankle just a little, so the muscles are completely intact. They are hoping some new skin will regnerate on its own, but eventually will have to do some skin grafting. She made a joke about that too. She has lost over 150 pounds in the last eight months due to gastric bypass surgery, so she said she has plenty of skin to spare and that they could take all the fat they wanted too!
Crazy girl! She is so brave, I admire her attitude.

Thanks once again for all your prayers, please keep them going throughout this recovery period.
